My clients often ask me what laptop to buy. The question gets asked frequently enough that I thought it would make a great, informative post!
Living in Fresno, you’ve got some good, but not great options for getting a laptop locally. I will discuss stores that I recommend and stores I think you can skip, but truth be told, I send the majority of my clients to Amazon to get a laptop because the selection is so much larger than what you can get in town.
If you do chose to buy locally, then Costco is a fantastic choice. The selection at Costco isn’t that great, but their warranty is always above and beyond what other stores offer. In Fresno, I think the Costco at either Riverpark or the store in Clovis will give you better service, as I haven’t had the best customer service at the Costco on Shaw and 99. Sad, but true.
Best Buy is just OK when it comes to buying your laptop, The selection isn’t too bad, but half the time the staff seems unaware of your existence. Back in the day Best Buy seemed to support their employees better with incentives that made the staff want to help you, but that seems quite lacking now.
If you do get your laptop at Best Buy, I personally think you are better off skipping the extended warranty they try to upsell you on. And don’t get me started on the Geek Squad, as they hire computer technicians that don’t have the experience needed to resolve your problem. Their motto seems to be format and start from scratch. That is rarely the way to fix a laptop issue.
Walmart has great prices on laptops, but let’s face it….it’s Walmart. Don’t expect the staff to have a decent knowledge about what they have on offer. So that is why I often just tell my clients to turn to Amazon. Fresno just doesn’t have the bigger technology stores that make getting a good deal on a laptop locally. Also, be wary of Craigslist scammers as some of the stories I have heard made me wary. I’ve sold a few laptops on Craigslist, and met some nice buyers, but the buyers said they met some really shady people.
With that being said, here are my top 2 recommendations for laptops at Amazon. I have included a budget laptop and a mid-range laptop. These will be updated as new laptops get introduced that are a better value for the money.
Please note that there is no high-end laptop because I feel that users that want a high-end laptop already have some sort of idea of what they are after. Same thing with the Microsoft Surface and Apple MacBooks. The Amazon links are my affiliate links, just to clarify, but electronics pay out so little it is a bit pointless (and hey, maybe it can help me pay to keep this site updated). I hope this helps you make a more informed decision. And please call us at (559) 797-1183 if you need any help with your new laptop!

I love my new computer!!! Not only is it touchscreen but it’s super lite weight like my old tablet. That was one thing I hoped I could avoid in switching from a tablet to a laptop. Very pleased with my purchase!!! 5 stars!Amazon Customer
2. Mid-Range Laptop Recommendation for Fresno, CA
$549.99 – Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6 Full HD, Intel Core i5, NVIDIA 940MX, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, Windows 10, E5-575G-53VG
My comments: Acer seems like an odd choice, but they have really been making great laptops lately. My favorite thing about this laptop is the choice of including a 256gb SSD hard drive. Oh, and a full number keypad!
